Empowering patients to prevent healthcare-associated infections

Empowering patients and their families to serve as partners in infection prevention efforts could be beneficial in preventing healthcare-associated infections. Education is essential for patient empowerment initiatives because patients often lack awareness of the risk of infections associated with medical and surgical procedures and treatments. There is some evidence that patient empowerment interventions to improve patient hand hygiene might be effective in reducing infections. It is plausible that a variety of other simple interventions such as empowering patients to improve personnel hand hygiene and improving patient bathing could be beneficial. Future goals for patient empowerment could include: (1) Incorporation of patients and families into existing educational care bundles of evidence-based practices in infection prevention and patient safety, (2) Development of bundled measures that all patients can use to reduce their risk for healthcare-associated infections, and (3) Development of bundled interventions tailored to patients infected with individual pathogens or specific patient populations with common risk factors (eg, surgical patients).
