Effects of antibacterial dishwashing liquid on foodborne pathogens and competitive microorganisms in kitchen sponges.
The effect of antibacterial dishwash liquid was investigated in a modified suspension test and in used sponges with and without food residues (laboratory study). A small study conducted in homes compared sponges in contact with either antibacterial or non-antibacterial dishwash liquid for 2 weeks. The results demonstrated that antibacterial dishwashing liquid was effective in reducing pathogens in the suspension test but not is used sponges. Journal of Food Protection 2002;65:61-65.
