Diarrhoea: a significant worldwide problem.

It has been estimated that there may be as many as 4 billion cases of acute diarrhoea each year worldwide. Diarrhoea continues to be a problem in the developing and developed world. Several groups of individuals are at increased risk, e.g. infants, the elderly. The spectrum of organisms varies depending on the clinical setting.
