Can soaps act as fomites in hospitals?

Ten soap cakes and 10 samples of liquid soap taken from a hospital environment in Mangalore, India were tested for microbial contamination. The 12 soap cake samples showed heavy contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, whilst one sample also contained Staphylococcus aureus. None of the liquid soap samples showed evidence of contamination. Journal of Hospital Infection 2006;62:244-5.
