This paper presents a systematic review of all published studies and, where appropriate, meta-analysis of studies that reported interventions in water quality, water supply, hygiene and sanitation in less developed countries. The meta-analyses focus on the evidence for any change arising from the interventions in diarrhoeal disease occurrence in non-outbreak conditions. Lancet Infectious Diseases 2005;5:42-52.
