Behavioral interventions to improve infection control practices.

This paper reviews several major behavioural theories and their application to the health professions. No single intervention has been shown to improve and sustain compliance with infection control practices by health care workers. No behavioural theory has been shown consistently to predict behaviour although there are shared elements that could be developed into an intervention to improve infection control practices. The paper outlines a model intervention program to enhance handwashing practices. American Journal of Infection Control 1998:26;245-53.
